Why young chess players keep losing winning positions

Most chess parents have watched the same evening happen. Your child comes out of round three having been a rook up, and the result on the pairing sheet is a loss. They know it was winning. You know it was winning. The obvious conclusion is that they need to learn more chess.

In my experience coaching young tournament players, that conclusion is usually wrong, and acting on it can make the problem worse. A child who was a rook up had already found the good move. The knowledge was there. What failed came afterwards, in the twenty moves nobody analyses because they look easy.

Winning material is only the beginning

Recognising an advantage and converting it are two different skills, and chess training often gives far more attention to gaining an advantage than to converting one. Puzzle training rewards the moment of discovery: find the fork, win the piece, next puzzle. The puzzle ends at exactly the point where a real game becomes hardest.

So a young player can be genuinely good at spotting tactics and still have far less practice at the thing that follows — a position where they are better, nothing is forced, and every move is theirs to choose. There is no bright idea to find. There is just a long stretch of not making a mistake.

That is a skill in its own right, and it does not arrive as a side effect of solving more tactics. It has to be practised directly.

Why children mentally relax

Watch a junior game closely after a material win and you will often see the child’s posture change. They sit back. They start moving faster. Something in them has quietly decided that the work is finished and the rest is a formality.

This is not laziness, and it is not arrogance. It is a reasonable response to how the game has felt so far: hard, then suddenly easy. The difficulty dropped away, so the effort dropped with it. Adults do this too — we simply have more experience of being punished for it.

The practical consequence is that the child stops doing the things that earned them the advantage. They stop checking what the opponent is threatening. They stop asking what changed. They play the move that looks obviously fine, because in a winning position most moves look fine, and one of them is not.

The opponent still gets a move

This sounds too simple to be worth writing down, but it is one of the most common patterns I see when children lose winning games. When a child is clearly better, they begin to treat the position as a puzzle they are solving alone. The opponent becomes a formality rather than a person actively trying to complicate things.

But an opponent who is losing has nothing to protect and every reason to create problems. They will start checking. They will attack two things at once. They will put a piece somewhere that looks unsound and requires an accurate reply. A player who has stopped looking for threats will meet the first of these with a natural-looking move, and the game will change character in one move.

The habit that prevents this is small and unglamorous: after every single opponent move, ask what that move now attacks. Not what it looks like. What it attacks.

Trading pieces requires judgement

Children are often told that when you are ahead in material, you should trade pieces. It is reasonable advice and it is where a great many won games are actually lost, because it gets applied as a rule rather than as a judgement.

A trade is not a neutral simplification. It produces a specific new position, and that position has its own character. Trading into an endgame is a decision about which endgame. A child who is a pawn up and trades every piece may reach a king and pawn endgame that is drawn, or even lost, and be surprised — because the rule said trade and they followed it.

The correction is not to stop trading. It is to add one question before the trade: if I make this exchange, what position is left, and do I actually want it? A young player who can answer that even roughly is doing something quite different from following a maxim.

Conversion is a trainable skill

Here is the part that surprises parents most. Children very often know the relevant principle. Ask them what to do when you are ahead in material and many will tell you to trade pieces, avoid counterplay and activate the king in the endgame. They can recite it.

Knowing a principle and recognising the moment it applies are different abilities. The principle lives in a lesson, phrased in general terms. The game presents an unfamiliar position with no label attached to it. Nothing on the board announces that this is the moment to be careful about counterplay.

That recognition only develops through repeated exposure to positions the child has not seen before. Solving the same familiar themes over and over builds fluency with the theme, not with recognising it in the wild. The training has to keep presenting the same idea in unfamiliar clothes until the child can identify it without being told what it is.

This is also why random puzzle solving, on its own, does not build a complete tournament decision process. Puzzles train the search for the best move in a position that is known to contain one. A tournament game asks something broader and quieter: is anything wrong here, and if not, how do I improve without letting anything become wrong?

A simple routine before every move

Young players do not need a long checklist. They need a short one they will actually run when they are tired in round four. This is the one I give students, and its whole value is that it is brief enough to survive under pressure.

  • What changed after my opponent’s move?
  • What is my opponent threatening?
  • What is my safest improving move?
  • If I trade, what position remains?
  • Am I moving because I calculated, or because the move feels obvious?

The last question is the one that does the most work. A great many junior mistakes are not calculation errors at all; they are moves that were never calculated, because the position felt comfortable enough that calculating seemed unnecessary.

What parents should look for

You do not need to be a strong player to see whether this is your child’s problem. Go through a recent loss with them and look at when the game turned rather than at the final position.

If the game was even and one difficult moment changed everything, there may be a knowledge or calculation gap worth studying. If they were clearly better and the position slipped away over several avoidable decisions, conversion habits deserve closer attention. More tactics alone may not address that problem.

Two questions are worth asking afterwards, in a neutral tone. What was your opponent trying to do here? And: what were you trying to do? A child who can answer the first question was watching the game. A child who cannot was solving a puzzle alone while someone sat opposite them making moves.

It is worth saying plainly that losing won games is a normal stage, not a sign that something is wrong with your child. Many strong players went through it. How quickly a player improves often depends less on talent than on whether these habits are practised deliberately.
